Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita
  mi ritrovai per una selva oscura,

詩人發現自己迷失在黑暗的樹林中(selva oscura)，誤入歧途(diritta via)也可翻譯為“正確的方式”救贖。

他下決心直接爬上一座小山，但他的方式是由三個野獸阻擋他無法迴避：一龍沙[8] （通常呈現為“豹”或“豹獅”），[9]一個利昂[10] （獅子) 和lupa [11] (母狼)。取自耶利米書5:6的三隻野獸被認為像徵著將不悔改的靈魂帶入地獄三大區域之一的三種罪惡。根據John Ciardi 的說法，這些是失禁（母狼）；暴力和獸交（獅子）；和欺詐和惡意（豹）; [12] Dorothy L.
